A new engineering degree programme – launched by Novia University of Applied Sciences and offered both at Bachelor’s and Master’s level – expands cooperation with the country’s largest leading firms in sustainable construction. This is done by concluding a new cooperation agreement that includes Ramboll, Sweco and Casagrande, as well as the largest construction firms YIT and SRV.

In this new letter of intent for 2023–2027, the parties undertake to jointly work toward shared visions and goals in order to promote climate-smart wood constructions, especially in larger buildings. Competence is needed in particularly demanding wooden construction, which this collaboration answers. The cooperation is based on increased focus on sustainable, climate-smart development in construction and civil engineering by Campus Raseborg and the construction firms.

Cooperation is targeted at teaching and theses works in the Master of Engineering, Structural Engineering Degree Programme as well as in the bachelor degree programmes for construction management and engineering in Raseborg. In addition, the cooperation aims at continuing education along with research and development activities in order to develop competence, services, and processes in terms of the planning of demanding wood constructions and their construction and production techniques.

Cooperation from 2017 with two large building consultancy companies, Ramboll and Sweco, and the architectural firm Casagrande Laboratory, with the purpose of promoting wood construction, has already resulted in theses as well as the creation of new continuing education and a Master’s degree programme in wood construction.

Cooperation is now expanded to include also the large construction companies of YIT and SRV, alongside activities within the scope of Novia’s new Master of Engineering Degree Programme. The purpose of this is to further promote competence development especially for use of wood constructions in larger buildings and to put stronger focus on the buildings’ lifecycle and climate aspects, the industry’s internationalization, and digitalization of construction via BIM (Building Information Modeling).

“Theses and internships at regional, national, and global level will continue to be part of the cooperation. In fact, they will increase. The cooperation is rewarding both for Novia’s students and staff. It also further strengthens the future vision of Novia’s unique strength and potential in cooperation with the construction industry even internationally, especially in the Nordic countries”, Vice Dean Mats Lindholm concludes.

Cooperation from 2017 has aimed to promote wood construction together with two large building consultancy companies, Ramboll and Sweco, and the architectural firm Casagrande Laboratory. This work has already resulted in e.g. theses and the creation of new continuing education and a Master's degree programme.

"Cooperation with educational institutions is an important part of our operations. We're glad to be included in the content planning of the structural engineering programme for exceptionally demanding wood constructions, and we've seen how the working life's views on skills needs have been taken into account in the degree programme's content. We wish to further expand on these activities in the larger picture", states Director Atte Leppänen from Sweco.

"It's great to continue this educational cooperation with Novia that was started already in 2017 and to welcome new actors. It's important for us to promote climate-smart construction and education connected to it", says Director Annina Peisa from Ramboll.
