Iiro Törmä

Iiro Törmä works as a researcher and UX/UI designer at Novia University of Applied Sciences, focusing on human-centred design and user experience in maritime operations. He currently contributes to the Remote Pilotage MVP project, where he is part of the research team and develops solutions that can support situation awareness in remote maritime operations.
He earned his Master of Arts in Collaborative and Industrial Design at Aalto University, where his thesis Status Monitoring in Multivessel MASS Operations – Designing for Shared Situational Awareness examined the design requirements for monitoring tools of autonomous vessels. Based on the research, a novel concept of machinery status monitoring interface was proposed.
Before joining the maritime field, Iiro worked extensively in visual communication, advertising, and magazine design. This background informs his design approach, combining clarity of communication with rigorous human factors research.
Iiro’s core competences include:
- Interface and user experience design and research
- Collaborative and participatory design
His research interests also cover:
- Human factors in safety-critical systems
- User experience with intelligent systems
He is especially interested in the user experience design of safety-critical systems, where good design requires deep understanding of users’ behaviour, preferences, and competence.
