Lukas Op de Beke

Lukas works at Novia University of Applied Sciences as part of the Remote Pilotage MVP project. Along with his role of project manager, he has the research-related tasks of writing a Concept of Operations and investigating the legal-regulatory aspects of remote pilotage.

Upon completing his legal studies, Lukas studied philosophy at KU Leuven and the University of Edinburgh, where he specialized in metaethics. His thesis focused on so-called hybrid views of morality, which argue that moral judgment is best understood as a mixture of desire and belief. At the same time, he developed a keen interest in moral philosophy and applied ethics in particular. Before joining Novia, Lukas worked temporarily as a customer service manager, tour guide, and market seller, after having taught moral philosophy and jurisprudence at the Radboud University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

With the intrusion of AI and other disruptive technologies into the maritime domain, Lukas believes that applied moral reasoning will play a crucial role in identifying the appropriate moral principles which, when implemented in concrete regulations, can pose as protective side-constraints.
