Iiro Törmä works as a researcher and UX/UI designer at Novia, focusing on human-centred design and user experience in maritime operations.
He holds a Master of Arts in Collaborative and Industrial Design from Aalto University. His master’s thesis, “Status Monitoring in Multivessel MASS Operations – Designing for Shared Situational Awareness”, examined design requirements for monitoring tools for autonomous vessels. Based on the research, a new concept for a machinery status monitoring interface was proposed.
Before entering the maritime sector, Iiro gained extensive experience in visual communication, advertising and magazine design. This background informs his approach to design, combining clear communication with thorough research into human factors.
Iiro’s core areas of expertise include:
- Interface and user experience design and research
- Collaborative and participatory design
His research interests also include:
- Human factors in safety-critical systems
- User experience with intelligent systems
He is particularly interested in user experience design for safety-critical systems, where good design requires a deep understanding of users’ behaviour, preferences and expertise.
