About the project
Wasa Zero Emission Data Center (WSTAR) is an infrastructure that facilitates research into climate-neutral data centers. WSTAR is part of the Technobothnia research infrastructure in Vaasa, Finland's energy capital, enabling close collaboration with the energy industry.Globally, data centers currently consume around 1% of all electrical energy, a figure that is expected to increase to 8-21% by 2030. Nearly all of the electricity consumed is released directly into the environment as waste heat without being utilized, resulting in a significant climate impact.
WSTAR enables research that can fundamentally transform the energy model of data centers. A strong future integration with surrounding energy systems will make it possible to reuse waste heat and use data centers to balance electricity grids, which are expected to become increasingly volatile due to the growing share of renewable energy sources.
WSTAR also enables research into future small-scale edge computing data centers. WSTAR is an important component in achieving the EU's goal of climate-neutral data centers by 2030.
