Remote Pilotage MVP

Remote pilotage MVP

About the project

Remote Pilotage MVP defines and develops a new way to guide ships safely from shore instead of onboard. Finland leads this innovative work together with public services, tech companies, and universities. The project creates a tested, scalable solution for safer, smarter, and more sustainable pilotage worldwide.

Novia coordinates the Remote Pilotage MVP project. The other partners are: Finnpilot Pilotage Ltd, Furuno Finland, Brighthouse Intelligence, Groke Technologies, Kongsberg Maritime Finland and Fintraffic Vessel Traffic Services Ltd. The project gets main funding from Business Finland.

Project goal

The goal of the Remote Pilotage MVP project is to define, develop, and test a complete Remote Pilotage solution that enables safe and efficient vessel navigation from shore. The project responds to the growing need for more flexible, sustainable, and digitally supported pilotage services.

This international collaboration brings together public authorities, technology providers, maritime operators, and academic partners. Together, we aim to create a scalable solution that supports fuel-efficient operations, improves safety through advanced data systems, and enables remote work in critical maritime roles.

The project includes system design, definition of interfaces and protocols, prototype development, safety analysis, and real-life testing. Intelligent tools and shared situational awareness will support pilots and crews in making accurate decisions – even when physically apart.

Novia University of Applied Sciences leads the coordination and research activities. Novia focuses especially on human-centered design and operational safety, producing knowledge that helps developers build systems that are both technically strong and user-friendly.

The outcomes of the project lay the foundation for future international standards. This is a concrete step toward a smarter, safer, and more sustainable maritime sector.
