MISAS - Modell för integrering av utländska studerande via språkbadsstudier och arbetslivssamarbete

Project goal

The aim of the collaboration and the project "Model for integration of foreign students through language immersion studies and work-life collaboration" is to facilitate the integration of international students. This is achieved by linking language immersion studies with workplace collaboration for better inclusion in working life.

Language skills play a key role in feeling included in a society. At the same time, it is time-consuming and challenging for students to learn a new language whilst simultaneously studying a new subject and supporting oneself in a new cultural environment. As a newly arrived student in Finland it is important that while learning a new language, one has the opportunity to practice and develop one's language skills in real settings and to get support and encouragement in this process.

Novia and Arcada are developing various forms of language support, language activities and language courses for students in English-taught degree programmes. The project also wishes to involve potential employers in the collaboration for testing student assignments and internships – 'Work and study' – as well as to create mentoring programmes for students. Through the collaboration, students gain insights into Finnish working life and the opportunity to practise their language skills in real situations, whilst employers have a great chance to get to know potential new employees.

As additional support for working life, the project will pilot a short training course that provides tools for workplaces wishing to strengthen their communication, well-being and inclusion. The training will be free of charge.
