Maritime Skills for Employability & Advancement - Kenya

MarSEA Kenya – Strengthening maritime vocational education and training in Kenya

About the project

MarSEA Kenya is an Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Vocational Education and Training (CB VET) project (101336728), coordinated by Novia University of Applied Sciences, Finland. It brings together three European and eight Kenyan partners from maritime education, maritime administration, civil society and industry.

The European partners are Novia University of Applied Sciences (Finland), the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and SIMAC – Svendborg International Maritime Academy (Denmark). They contribute their experience in maritime education and training, in maritime curricula aligned with international standards, and in teacher training.

The Kenyan partners are:

Education institutions

Kenya Coast National Polytechnic (KCNP): a public national polytechnic in Mombasa offering technical and vocational programmes, including maritime-related training
County Government of Kilifi, through Muyeye Vocational Training Centre: a public vocational training centre on the Kenyan coast
Kisumu Maritime Centre (KIMARCE): a maritime training institution on Lake Victoria, accredited by TVETA, KEBS and KMA
Mount Kenya University (MKU): a Kenyan university that contributes expertise in teacher education and higher-level programmes

Maritime authority

Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA): the state agency that regulates and coordinates maritime affairs in Kenya, including the training and certification of seafarers

Women in the maritime sector

WOMESA Kenya: the Kenyan chapter of Women in Maritime in Eastern and Southern Africa, a non-profit association that promotes the participation of women in the maritime sector

Industry

Express Shipping & Logistics (EA) Ltd: a shipping and logistics company that brings the employer’s view to the project

Associated partner

TVET Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (TVET CDACC): the national body that develops competency-based curricula and assesses and certifies TVET learners in Kenya

Together, the partners develop maritime training that matches international standards and the needs of employers. They also train VET teachers and instructors, and widen access to maritime careers for young people and women in Kenya’s coastal and Lake Victoria regions.

Project goal

1. Develop and update maritime VET curricula and training modules in line with STCW requirements and industry needs
2. Build the teaching capacity of Kenyan maritime instructors through train-the-trainer activities, including simulator-based and digital training methods
3. Strengthen links between training providers, the maritime authority and shipping companies, for example through work-based learning and placements
4. Increase the participation of women and young people in maritime education and employment
5. Share the results with maritime training providers in Kenya and the wider East African region
