Från regional biomassa till näringsberikat biokol – ett pilotprojekt för ett hållbart jordbruk

About the project

Biochar is considered a promising material for improving soil quality, enhancing material performance, and sequestering carbon. However, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding its long-term environmental impacts and economic viability.

At the same time, the transition towards a circular bioeconomy is creating new opportunities to utilize thinning wood and low-grade forest biomass for biochar production, which can support sustainable forestry and create new regional value chains.

In agriculture, biochar can improve soil structure, water retention, and nutrient availability. Of particular interest is the possibility of enriching biochar with digestate from biogas production, thereby returning recycled nutrients to arable land.

Project goal

The project aims to identify suitable biomass feedstocks for biochar production, evaluate methods for nutrient enrichment, and assess the technical requirements for sustainable regional production. In the short term, the project will build knowledge and provide a foundation for a future international project application.
