Traficom has approved the application from Novia University of Applied Sciences to provide training for vehicle inspectors. This means that engineering students in Mechanical and Production Engineering can now complete the courses required for inspection qualifications already during their studies. The courses will become mandatory in the curriculum in 2027 for third-year students who have chosen the Automotive and Transport Technology specialization, but they will also be offered to an external target group — that is, individuals already working in the automotive sector or those who meet the authorities’ requirements to participate in the training.

Traficom’s decision is an important step both for Novia’s education and for the automotive industry

A smoother path to practical training and qualification

Starting from the third year of studies, students can complete their internship at an inspection station and take the required courses. After completing the courses and the associated internship, students may take Traficom’s theoretical and practical final examinations and obtain the right to perform periodic inspections even before graduating.

This strengthens Novia’s role as a Swedish‑language education provider in a field where the need for competence is high.

“Traficom’s approval is an important recognition of the quality of our Automotive and Transport Technology specialization. The fact that our students can now complete the courses and practical training required for inspection qualifications already during their studies makes the path to working life both smoother and faster. At the same time, we strengthen the supply of qualified professionals in a sector where the need for certified vehicle inspectors is significant,” says the initiator, Senior Lecturer Mikael Tätting.

Continuing education for inspectors approved

Novia has also been granted permission to offer the annual continuing education required for individuals who already hold inspection rights. This gives the university of applied sciences an important role in supporting professionals, strengthening connections with alumni, and providing a Swedish‑language continuing education pathway that previously did not exist.

A shorter path to working life

Previously, the process leading up to the final examination could take several months after graduation. By integrating the courses and internship into the degree programme, students can now move directly into work as inspectors. This increases their employability and meets the needs of the industry.

“With these new educational opportunities, Novia hopes that more people will discover Automotive and Transport Technology as a future‑oriented field. The decision is seen as a major step forward for both the university and the automotive sector,” says Programme Director Kaj Rintanen.
