Umar is one of the participants of the Vaasa International Talents programme, Round 5. Originally from Pakistan, Umar arrived in Finland in 2023 to pursue his master’s degree in Computer Engineering at Åbo Akademi University. With a passion for research, software development, and learning about international working cultures, he has navigated his journey with determination.

Joining Vaasa International Talents

Umar applied to the Vaasa International Talents programme encouraged by a friend and thanks to his motivation and a well-prepared resume, earned a spot in the programme. “I hadn’t researched much about it, but I applied with proper motivation,” he recalls.

For Umar, Vaasa Intenational Talents was appealing because it offered an international environment where he could meet people from different backgrounds and gain insights into Finnish work culture. “It was a great experience, and I learned a lot that will help me in the future,” he explains.

A memorable learning journey

Umar found the programme highly beneficial in understanding Finnish working life. While he was already familiar with Finnish culture through conversations with senior friends, the programme introduced him to the practical nuances of professional life. “I learned a lot about how managers approach candidates, cover letters, resumes, and LinkedIn profiles. These are things I didn’t know before,” he says.

A session on personality styles stood out for him. “It was really good because it aligned with my interests. I learned about different manager personalities and how to approach them. I even realized I have dominant personality traits myself,” he shares.

Highlights of the programme

Umar enjoyed not only the structured sessions but also informal moments such as coffee breaks, where participants could relax and connect. “The coffee breaks were nice, a time to rest from lectures. I really liked the alumni sessions” he says.

The programme also helped Umar expand his professional network, though he notes that networking is a continuous journey. “I have a few professional contacts now, but I plan to connect with more people in the future to grow my network”.

Professional journey & thesis work

Currently, Umar is working as a project assistant at Åbo Akademi University, where he is conducting a systematic mapping study as part of his master’s thesis. “It wasn’t easy at first. I reached out to several professors, sent follow-up emails, and eventually got selected for my project,” he explains.

Umar appreciates the Finnish approach to work: attention to detail, punctuality, and professionalism. “Even small mistakes are pointed out, and the meetings always start on time. That’s really impressive,” he says.

Umar’s advice for newcomers

For new international students in Finland, Umar emphasizes two key points: learning the language and building connections with professors. “Attend classes physically, when possible, get to know your professors, and start learning the language early. These things help with job opportunities and internships,” he advises.

He also encourages students to be proactive in networking. “Talk to professionals, share your ideas, and don’t be afraid to approach people. That’s how you grow your network,” he says.

Looking ahead

Umar’s immediate goal is to secure a professional career in Finland. Looking further ahead, he hopes to start his own software business, providing services in software development and related fields. “Right now, I want to establish myself professionally, and then I’ll pursue entrepreneurship,” he explains.

Umar’s story reflects adaptability, curiosity, and resilience. Through the Vaasa International Talents programme, his master’s studies, and his own proactive approach, he has gained valuable insights into Finnish working life and is actively shaping the career path he wishes. was selected for the programme
