Meet Cathy Lionel and hear about her journey from Cameroon to Vaasa

Cathy Lionel is one of the participants of the Vaasa International Talents programme, Round 5. Originally from Cameroon, Cathy arrived in Finland by way of Dubai, where she worked as a teacher of English and French. With a growing passion for marketing, public speaking, and idea development, she decided to pivot her career path. That’s how she found her way to VAMK University of Applied Sciences, where she is currently studying International Business.

Joining Vaasa International Talents

Cathy first applied to the Vaasa International Talents programme in her first year but wasn’t selected due to eligibility rules since first year students can not join the programme. Yet she didn’t let that setback stop her. “I didn’t give up,” she says with a smile. She applied again in her second year and this time, she was selected.

What drew Cathy to VIT was its international nature. “I knew I would meet people from different cultures and nationalities,” she explains. She had also read alumni stories that deeply inspired her and gave her a clearer picture of what professional life could look like in Finland.

A memorable learning journey

Cathy explains us how impactful the VIT programme has been in helping her understand Finnish culture and working life. “There was a session on Finnish culture that was an eye-opener,” she recalls. Learning about Finnish attitudes, independence, and work–life balance shifted her perspective. “Where I worked in Dubai, everything was monitored. Here, there's more trust. You can start work at 8 or 9, as long as the job gets done. That independence and flexibility is something I really appreciate.”

“I was always curious: what does a typical day at work look like here? How different is it from my previous experiences?” During the programme alumni shared their stories and experiences and helped Cathy better understand expectations and workplace dynamics in Finland.

Two sessions especially stood out for her: one on personality types and another on multi-potentiality. “They helped me understand who I am and what I'm capable of,” she shares. The sessions encouraged her to explore her strengths and align them with her future career path. “Now I’m trying to build a career based on my skills and potential.”

Highlights of the programme

Beyond the lectures and formal sessions, Cathy highlights the personal connections she formed during breaks and discussions with fellow participants. “We realized we were going through the same challenges. We encouraged each other,” she says.

For the first time, through the programme, she visited companies in the Vaasa region, an experience that gave her practical exposure and broadened her perspective.

Professional journey & networking

Cathy is currently working as a Communications Trainee at the City of Vaasa. In her role, she attends events, writes articles, and helps plan upcoming initiatives. “It’s exciting because I get to be part of the process from planning to communication,” she explains.

She explains that networking has played an important role for her when moving to Finland. Cathy has been proactive. “At school, we have events with both students and company representatives. I’ve met new friends and professionals this way.” She also attends company-organized events and contributes to organizing activities at her workplace, another way she expands her network.

Cathy’s advice for newcomers

Her advice to new international students and professionals in Finland is simple but powerful: “Have an open mind. Get out of your comfort zone. Network. Share your skills and ideas.”

She encourages others not to be afraid of being different or of showcasing what they can offer. “You might bring something unique to the table that’s not yet known here. Be creative. Be bold.”

Cathy's story is one of resilience, curiosity, and growth. Through the Vaasa International Talents programme and her own dedication, she has not only gained valuable insights into Finnish working life but has also taken active steps toward building the career she wishes!
