The major part of the studies is conducted online, in combination with self-studies and team work. The thesis work is realized as a research and development project related to working life.

Structure of Studies

The studies are arranged at site and online with lecture materials, as well as the assignments to be completed online. We meet on average two days a month and the lectures that take place on campus will be recorded.

Moving to Finland for the studies is not necessary. It is recommended but not mandatory for you during the studies to attend some sessions in person at campus. This can be a good opportunity to meet and network with your peers and thesis supervisor. Independently of this, it is mandatory to visit Finland to get the original version(s) of previous degree certificate(s) checked and to strengthen one’s personal identity when initiating the studies.

Language of Instruction

The studies are conducted in English.

Thesis

The Master's thesis is a demanding development project or research work combining theory, praxis and creation of new knowledge. The thesis subject and aim are based on requirements and needs of the maritime field. The theme of the thesis (30 ECTS) must be related to the fields studied, preferably agreed upon with an industry representative. The thesis thus works as a bridge between study and work and gives students the opportunity to apply theoretical thinking to practical problems. Constructing a thesis subject and the potential collaboration with an organization is at the responsibility of the student.

Alternatives for the thesis are, for example:

  • an investigation or analysis
  • a development project
  • theoretical work
  • product development, such as a prototype, process or a model.

Career Opportunities

After completing the programme, you will be qualified to pursue a wide range of career opportunities. Graduates will be better suited for work within shipping companies, maritime authorities, ports, and a wide range of related organisations such as transport companies, maritime insurance companies, marine technology providers, education, and research. These fields have a constant need for employees, and the fast development within the maritime industry brings more opportunities with it.

Qualification

Under the Finnish legislation, a person who has completed a Master's degree is qualified for posts or positions for which the qualification requirement is a second-cycle higher education degree. In some cases, the qualification requirement also includes the completion of studies in certain specified fields of study. The degree falls under the Article 11 of the Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the recognition of professional qualifications, level e.
