Reinstatement of the Right to Study and Extended Duration of Studies

Here you can read about
- reinstatement of the right to study (for those who have lost their right to study at Novia UAS) and
- extended duration of studies (for those who need extra time to complete their studies).

Reinstatement of Right to Study

A student loses his/her right to study at the university of applied sciences for example if he/she:
- does not register attendance or absence within the stipulated time (1.5-10.9 for the autumn term and 1.12-10.1 for the spring term),
- does not apply for extended duration of studies while the right of study is still in force (latest 15.11 or 15.5),
- has applied for extended duration of studies but has not been granted an extension.

If you have lost your right to study at the Novia UAS, you can apply to have it reinstated if it is possible for you to complete the remaining studies within the time remaining of the study right or within the extension granted. The right of study can usually be reinstated from the beginning of the following term. This means that if you lose your right to study in September and apply to have it reinstated, you can usually regain your right to study from the beginning of January (beginning of the following term). If you lose your right to study in January and apply to have it reinstated, you can usually regain your right to study from the beginning of August (beginning of the following term).

All the terms that you have not had right to study because you forgot to register for the academic year are counted as terms of absence. If you have used all terms of absence which you are allowed to have all, the terms that you did not have right to study are counted as terms of attendance.

The application for reinstatement of right to study is subject to a fee. A handling fee of 50 euros must be paid before your application is processed. You can pay the handling fee here.

The application for reinstatement of right to study is made on a fixed form which you can find here. Your application is sent to Student Services which prepares the case and verifies that you have paid the handling fee. The decision to reinstate the right to study is made by the President on the basis of proposal by the Head of Student Services. You will receive a copy of the decision to the e-mail address you provide in your application (alternatively by post if you state it in your application).

If you have intentionally or through neglect terminated your studies at a stage when it is no longer possible to graduate within the time remaining of your right to study, and the remaining studies are equivalent to more than one academic year, it is recommended that you complete the remaining studies at the Open University at Novia UAS, i.e. while you do not have right to study for a degree at Novia UAS. Once you have completed the remaining studies, or the remaining studies can be completed within a maximum of one academic year, you can apply to have your right to study reinstated for a maximum of one academic year to complete the studies. The decision is made by the President on the basis of proposal by the Head of Student Services and by statement from the Head of Degree Programme.

You can find information about reinstatement of right to study and the handling fee in the degree regulations (§§ 29-30).

Extended Duration of Studies

If you are unable to complete your studies within the stipulated time, you can apply for extended duration of studies. The duration of your studies is defined based on the degree programme you are studying at, and the stipulated time to complete studies is a maximum of one year longer than the scope of the studies, where 60 ECTS credits correspond to one year of study.

If you degree programme comprises 210 credits, the duration of your studies is 3,5 years + 1 year = 4,5 years (9 terms),
If you degree programme comprises 240 credits, the duration of your studies is 4 years + 1 year = 5 years (10 terms),
If you degree programme comprises 270 credits, the duration of your studies is 4,5 years + 1 year = 5,5 years (11 terms).

Deviation from this, the UAS may determine other duration of studies e.g. for part-time studies. Contact the Student Services at your campus if you have questions about the duration of your studies.

You should apply for extended duration of studies while your right to study is still in force. If your right to study ends on 31 December, you must apply for an extension no later than 15 November. If your right to study ends 31 July, you must apply for an extension no later than 15 May. The duration of studies can usually be extended once and for a maximum of one year. The extension must be based on a realistic and feasible plan for how the studies will be completed. If you are granted an extension of the duration of studies, you will not be able to register absence (you are registered as attending for the remaining duration of your studies).

The application for extended duration of studies is subject to a fee. A handling fee of 50 euros must be paid before your application is processed. You can pay the handling fee here.

The application for extended duration of studies is made on a fixed form which you can find here. Please notice that you should log in with "username@edu.novia.fi", not with e-mail address. Your application is sent to Student Services, which prepares the case and verifies that you have paid the handling fee. The decision of extended duration of studies is made by the Head of Student Services, or an official at Student Services, depending on the number of credits missing completing the degree.

In the degree regulations you can find information about duration of studies (§ 16), extended duration of studies (§ 26) and the handling fee (§ 30).
