Master of Engineering/Master of Maritime Management, Maritime Management
Master's Degree in English
Study Objectives and Studies
This Master's degree programme is for you who are active within the maritime field and who wish to deepen your knowledge and become more attractive for different management duties within the maritime industry.
The Master's degree programme in Maritime Management comprises 60 ECTS and the degree title is Master of Engineering or Master of Maritime Management, depending on your previous Bachelor's degree.
The programme has a special focus on building an overall understanding of the maritime field. The studies include management in general, maritime management and for the maritime industry distinctive financial and logistical features. Elective studies from Novia’s or our partners’ course programmes will give the student a possibility to obtain a more personal competence profile, especially if the degree thesis and electives studies complement each other.
Our working methods within the program ensure that you practice your project management and leadership skills and improve your professional communication skills in English.
The studies are optimised for flexible learning and studying, parallel with fulltime employment ashore or at sea. The meetings are used for solving study technical problems and some lecturing. The major part of the studies and instruction is conducted using the learning platform Moodle.
After completing the programme, you will be qualified to pursue a wide range of career opportunities. Graduates will be better suited for work within shipping companies, maritime authorities, ports, and a wide range of related organisations such as transport companies, maritime insurance companies, marine technology providers, education, and research. These fields have a constant need for employees, and the fast development within the maritime industry brings more opportunities with it.
Eligibility to Apply
Eligibility to apply to this programme is conferred by an appropriate UAS Bachelor’s degree or another appropriate higher education degree and at least two years of subsequent work experience in a relevant field. An appropriate Bachelor's degree in a related field for this programme can be Bachelor of Maritime Management, sjökapten (YH) or merikapteeni (AMK); Bachelor of Engineering (seafaring), ingenjör (YH) i sjöfart or merenkulun insinööri (AMK); or another appropriate Bachelor's degree completed in a relevant field such as seafaring or marine engineering.
The Language of Instruction
The studies are conducted in English.
The Master's thesis is a demanding development project or research work combining theory, praxis and creation of new knowledge. The thesis subject and aim are based on requirements and needs of the maritime field. The theme of the thesis (30 ECTS) must be related to the fields studied, preferably agreed upon with an industry representative. The thesis thus works as a bridge between study and work, and gives students the opportunity to apply theoretical thinking to practical problems.
Alternatives for the thesis are, for example:
- an investigation (e.g., investigation, mapping, analysis and / or evaluation)
- a development project (e.g. development of working methods or activities)
- product development (such as a prototype or a model)
Under the Finnish legislation, a person who has completed a Master's degree is qualified for posts or positions for which the qualification requirement is a second-cycle higher education degree. In some cases, the qualification requirement also includes the completion of studies in certain specified fields of study. The degree falls under the Article 11 of the Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the recognition of professional qualifications, level e.
Co-operation with Other Parties
Novia UAS and Aboa Mare, the unit for maritime education, co-operates with several universities both internationally and nationally. Co-operation takes place e.g. within R&D projects, student and staff exchange and continuing education. International maritime actors visit Aboa Mare on a regular basis.
Aboa Mare’s location, in the same building as many representatives of maritime authorities, ensures smooth co-operation with them.
Given that the language of tuition is English, the possibilities for working on an international scale, both during and after the studies, are good. For example, the thesis project is suitable to conduct abroad or in an international business. Studies abroad are also possible.
Postgraduate Study Opportunities
With a Master's degree students are eligible to apply for doctoral studies at a university.
