The student:
- has a broad understanding of that the well-being of populations and the economic viability of many businesses in coastal zones depend on the environmental status of these areas
- is familiar with the use of long term management tools, such as integrated coastal management, to enhance the protection of coastal resources whilst increasing the efficiency of their uses.
- has the knowledge on how to decrease risks for excessive exploitation of natural coastal resources in order to protect biodiversity and habitats

The student:
- has a deep understanding of the importance of natural resources for human wellbeing and that sustainable use of natural resources is necessary for economic growth and welfare
- has a wide knowledge of the importance of ecosystem services and how these can be valuated by economic tools
- is able to implement, within his/her own field, methods which make the material- and energy-efficient utilization of natural resources possible
- knows how to analyse the effects and efficiency of different control mechanisms, e.g. carbon credit, environmental taxes and marginal values
- has a good knowledge about the methods used for environmental as well as economical impact assessment and is aware of the short comings of these methods
