I am a behavioural ecologist with a strong interest in ecophysiology. My research interests focus on animal behavioural and physiological responses to environmental sources of stress, like temperature, predation risk and food availability, both during breeding and in winter condition.
In the past 10 years, during my PhD and several postdoc experiences, my research has mostly focused on habitat selection in predator-prey interactions, as well as parental care, maternal allocation in eggs, offspring condition and behaviour depending on perceived predation risk and food availability. I used several study systems studying predator-prey and brood parasite interactions in birds (e.g. owl-passerines and cuckoo-redstart interactions), as well as maternal effects and offspring condition in both birds and fish (passerines in the wild and guppy in captivity).
Currently I am studying ecophysiological adaptations in the colour polymorphic tawny owl (Strix aluco) within the project "Spatio-temporal eco-evolutionary dynamics under environmental change" of Dr. Patrik Karell. My research aims to understand how different colour morphs of tawny owls are maintained in natural populations and how they cope with changing environmental and climatic conditions. In particular, I am studying whether offspring of pairs with different or matching colour morphs vary in their condition and recruitment rate to the local population, according to environmental conditions. During this project I will also study the telomere dynamics and oxidative metabolism of different colour morphs under harsh winter conditions, as well as during breeding, using both experimental and long-term datasets.
