Make your future
Goal
Urgent demand for new energy sources and scarce natural resources, the pressure of population as well as increasing needs for waste management, are major challenges for nations and municipalities all over the world. Environmental issues are nowadays considered a mega trend and business activities in connection to energy and the environment are developing rapidly.
To meet these challenges industrial companies, authorities and organisations need engineers that can grasp their assignments in a holistic way. These engineers need to have the required technical competence as well as a capability to consider the economical, legislative and social aspects.
Novia UAS (and its predecessors) has educated environmental engineers since 1996. We are now offering national and international students a degree programme in Energy Technology. Learning methods focus on strengthening the students' abilities in problem solving and teamwork. Skills in written and oral communication are also emphasised in the degree programme.
The aim of the studies is to provide broad-based and versatile technical knowledge in the field of Energy and Environmental Technology as well as Sustainable Development. This includes the ability to creatively solve technical problems, work in project teams as well as communicate and collaborate.
The student also gets a basic insight into Project and Energy Management. Subjects covered include Energy Production and Control, Resource and Waste Management, as well as System and Life-Cycle Analysis.
The programme is 2 years and comprises 240 ECTS.* The programme is meant for students who have already completed at least 2 years of university level studies in a related field (120 ECTS, for details see general eligibility). These earlier studies will be accredited and included in your degree. The studies are completed as full-time studies in Vaasa. The programme is suitable for students who would like to change the field of studies or supplement their existing university degree with a Bachelor Degree in Energy Technology and Computer Technology.
* Eligibility criteria: 120 ECTS of previous university level studies in the field of Energy, Electrical or Mechanical Technology.

Study Content
The engineering education has a strong base in chemistry, physics, and modern mathematical methods, as well as in industrial economy, thus, providing the essential tools for successful studies and an engineer's career.
Especially at the beginning of the studies, an effort is made to strengthen the English professional language, in order to facilitate successful studies. Basic courses in the two national languages Finnish and Swedish are also provided.
The programme in Energy Technology is designed to provide the students with a comprehensive competence in environmental and energy-related issues that are relevant especially for industrial companies, but also for authorities and organisations.
The education includes subjects such as energy production and efficiency, resource and waste management, energy storage, system analysis and environmental legislation, as well as project-based working and the management of projects.
The broad base described above enables the engineers to start their career in many different positions and the holistic view provides tools for communicating and cooperating with many different kinds of specialists in an international context.
Practical training can be performed in companies and/or in research and development project groups. The practical training periods give the student the opportunities to get acquainted with working life, to get valuable contacts and not least to be able to test his or her abilities. The final Thesis project is mostly carried out in cooperation with companies.
The studies consist of:
- Environmental Engineering
- Process Technology
- Energy Control Engineering
- Energy Design and Optimization
- Electrical Energy Systems
- Mechanical Energy Transmission Systems
The studies are made up of:
- Previous university-level studies, 120 ECTS
- Professional studies, 75 ECTS
- Internship, 30 ECTS
- Thesis, 15 ECTS
The working methods include case studies, projects and teamwork, all of which aim at improving communication, argumentation and cooperation skills. The approach provides a good basis for future industrial project work.

Degree Project
The Bachelor’s thesis comprises 15 ECTS. It often acts as a link between studies and career and provides students with an opportunity to apply theoretical models to practical problems. The thesis becomes part of the student’s competence profile. The thesis can consist of internal and /or external commissions, joint projects or other projects related to working life.
These can be, for example:
- reports (e.g. investigations, surveys, analyses and/or evaluations)
- development work (e.g. development of working methods or activities)
- product development (e.g. a prototype or a model)
- a plan, a product or an artistic work (e.g. an event, a collection, an artistic production, a course, design of material such as guides/manuals or handbooks)
- a portfolio
Continuing Education Opportunities
After completing Bachelor’s Degree it is possible to continue to Masters level studies at Universities or Universities of Applied Sciences.
Career Opportunities
Common career choices after graduation from Energy Technology include industrial or consultative work as a project engineer in the fields of energy and environmental technology, work with environmental and quality systems, as well as recycling and optimization of the use of raw materials and energy. Other fields of work include research and development within the environmental and energy fields.
The engineers are often developers, managers, project engineers or responsible for communication and authority contacts concerning environmental issues. Many engineers are consultants, supporting industrial companies in environmental issues or cooperating in different projects concerning for instance renewable energy production or waste management. You can also become a governmental or local official or find a challenging job in associations or international organizations.
The Vaasa region hosts the biggest concentration of energy-related business activities in Northern European countries, including many international companies. The region is also a pioneer in waste management.
Language of Instruction
The programme in Energy Technology is offered in English.
Collaboration With Other Actors
Our cooperation with partner universities provides students with an additional possibility to specialise further, or to gain a broader competence, by completing exchange studies.
