This master’s degree programme is for you who wish to deepen your knowledge in sustainable management of natural resources. The programme has a special focus on the coastal environment and natural resource economics. Vital competences for working in the field of natural resource management are skills in participatory processes and conflict management which you will be able to obtain. You will also gain advanced project management and leadership skills and be able to improve your professional communication skills.
This Master’s Degree Programme is for students who wish to deepen their knowledge in sustainable management of natural resources and already have a Bachelor’s degree that is judged suitable by Novia UAS (such as; agriculture, horticulture, environmental planning, forestry or natural resources), as well as a minimum of three years of working experience. The programme has a special focus on the coastal environment and natural resource economics. Vital competences for working in the field of natural resource management are skills in participatory processes and conflict management which students will be able to obtain. Students will also gain advanced project management and leadership skills and be able to improve your professional communication skills.
The language of instruction
The programme is taught in English.
The studies provide means for a deeper understanding of sustainable use and management of natural resources, as well as improved leadership and communication skills. 15 ECTS consists of courses about natural resource management and 15 ECTS of leadership and communication. The theme of the thesis (30 ECTS) shall be related to these fields. The tuition within the programme is predominantly web-based.
Structure of studies
The studies consist of:
- Advanced professional studies 30 ECTS
- Thesis 30 ECTS
The studies comprise 60 ECTS (30 ECTS consist of 6 courses and 30 ECTS of the thesis) and are to be completed in two years. The studies are designed for students who already are working in the field of natural resources. The studies consist of virtual components and intensive course weeks (two per academic term) at campus Raseborg in Ekenäs. The thesis work is realized as a research and development project related to working life.
The thesis comprises of 30 ECTS. It often acts as a bridge between study and work, and gives students the opportunity to apply theoretical models to practical problems. The work becomes part of the student's personal skills profile. Alternatives for the thesis are, for example:
- an investigation (e.g., investigation, mapping, analysis and / or evaluation)
- a development project (e.g. development of working methods or activities)
- product development (such as a prototype or a model)
Graduates can pursue careers in e.g. governmental departments and agencies, environmental agencies (private and public), consulting companies, companies that produce products from natural resources, and non-governmental organizations. A future career in research and development is also a possibility as well as becoming self-employed as a consultant.
Under the Finnish legislation, a person who has completed a Master’s degree is qualified for posts or positions for which the qualification requirement is a second-cycle higher education degree. In some cases, the qualification requirement also includes the completion of studies in certain specified fields of study. The degree falls under the Article 11 of the Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the recognition of professional qualifications, level e.
Given that the language of tuition is English, the possibilities for working on the international scale, both during and after the studies, are good. For example, the thesis project is perfectly well suitable to conduct abroad or on an international issue.
Co-operation with other parties
The Natural Resource Management programme works tightly with the other environmental profiled degree programme at Campus Raseborg. Cooperation with universities, state and regional authorities as well as private companies are also a part of the activities.
Focus is on management of natural resources. Cooperation with various universities, research institutes and relevant NGOs are possible in many aspects of the studies, not least in the thesis-phase. This also includes Novia’s and Åbo Akademi University’s joint rearch- and development institute Aronia.
Postgraduate study opportunities
With a Master’s degree students are eligible to apply for doctoral studies at a university.
