Final Project

The Master's thesis is a demanding development project or research work combining theory, praxis and creation of new knowledge. The thesis subject and aim are based on requirements and needs of the maritime field. The theme of the thesis (30 ECTS) must be related to the fields studied, preferably agreed upon with an industry representative. The thesis thus works as a bridge between study and work, and gives students the opportunity to apply theoretical thinking to practical problems.

Alternatives for the thesis are, for example:

  • an investigation (e.g., investigation, mapping, analysis and / or evaluation)
  • a development project (e.g. development of working methods or activities)
  • product development (such as a prototype or a model)

Under the Finnish legislation, a person who has completed a Master's degree is qualified for posts or positions for which the qualification requirement is a second-cycle higher education degree. In some cases, the qualification requirement also includes the completion of studies in certain specified fields of study. The degree falls under the Article 11 of the Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the recognition of professional qualifications, level e.

Co-operation with Other Parties

Novia UAS and Aboa Mare, the unit for maritime education, co-operates with several universities both internationally and nationally. Co-operation takes place e.g. within R&D projects, student and staff exchange and continuing education. International maritime actors visit Aboa Mare on a regular basis.

Aboa Mare’s location, in the same building as many representatives of maritime authorities, ensures smooth co-operation with them.

Given that the language of tuition is English, the possibilities for working on an international scale, both during and after the studies, are good. For example, the thesis project is suitable to conduct abroad or in an international business. Studies abroad are also possible.

Postgraduate Study Opportunities

With a Master's degree students are eligible to apply for doctoral studies at a university.
