Master of Culture and Arts, Entrepreneurship in the Arts

Entrepreneurship in the Arts is carried out in close cooperation with established actors in the international art world. The focus of the program is on creating the possibility for you to create the international network that is relevant for your work. Only ten students will be admitted so it will be possible to adjust the content of the program to the individual needs of the students. Your own work and how to present it will be at the center of the process.
The program contains 60 ECTS credits and consists of six blocks of intense studies on location, with periods of self-directed long distance studies in between these blocks.
The six blocks of studies on location will run for a total of eight weeks during the period May 2015 to May 2016. Two of these blocks will take place at Campus Allegro, Jakobstad, Finland (two weeks in the autumn and two weeks in spring). Four of the blocks of on-location studies will consist of trips (5 to 7 days each) to various centers in the art world, in different cities around the world.
The long distance studies will consist of extensive individual work and self-directed literature studies. The individual work will be focused on working on your own portfolio, written assignments, presentations, and developing a book that presents your work. The long-distance studies can be done from anywhere in the world.
This degree programme offers you a unique opportunity to upgrade your entrepreneurial skills as well as ways of communicating your artistic practice. The programme gives you the chance to establish international contacts in order to expand your field of professional activity. The studies are aimed for professional artists with a bachelor or master degree and at least three years’ work experience in the field of visual culture and contemporary art.

Through mentorship, workshops, field trips and individual studies, the program will allow you to:

- Deepen your artistic practice.
- Develop your ability to plan and direct your own work to suit local, national and international conditions.

- Develop your portfolio and other presentation tools.
- Get a close look at the workings of the international art scenes and markets.
- Learn about galleries, international art fairs, biennials and other established events in the art world, and get the chance to visit a selection of these events.

The programme is offered in English.
The focus is to equip students effectively so that they can communicate their artistic skills and establish international contacts in order to expand their field of professional activity. The program has an international profile and will feature experts from various fields within the art world. They will give lectures and also work as supervisors and mentors for you during your individual work process throughout the program.
Choosing a main subject or field of specialization
Degree programme content has a personal emphasis highlighted by each individual student’s artistic skills. The programme focuses on specific competences relating to a strategic mastery of creative processes along with individual artistic profile marketing.
Structure of studies
For students who have an earlier Bachelor’s Degree in Culture and Arts (240 ECTS) the studies consist of 60 ECTS:
- Advanced studies 20 ECTS
- Elective advanced studies 10 ECTS
- Master’s thesis 30 ECTS
The programme comprises both contact studies and distance learning. Contact studies consist of six blocks - two at the Allegro campus in Jakobstad (two weeks in the autumn term and two weeks in the spring term) plus four intensive study trips to various art exhibitions, biennales and art centres throughout Europe. The studies have a personal emphasis highlighting the artistic practise of each individual student. Distance learning includes literature studies, written assignments (statements and analyses), artistic and published works.
The thesis accounts for 30 sp, of which 15 sp comprise study presentations. This component involves exhibition and communication methods which clearly show the original artistic skills of the individual student. The thesis contains preliminary work (research methods and widespread research), development of the individual’s professional profile, supervision and follow-up.
The programme enables students to establish themselves and consolidate their place in the international field of visual culture and contemporary art.
The Entrepreneurship in Arts degree programme is based on international principles and the creation of a network in the world of international art. A significant part of contact teaching will take place abroad. Persons active in the world of international art will serve as lecturers and supervisors.

The degree programme is established in close cooperation with various art institutions and representatives in the international world of art.
Postgraduate study opportunities
With a Master’s degree students are able to continue to university post-graduate studies. “Under the Finnish legislation, a person who has taken the Master’s degree is qualified for posts or positions for which the qualification requirement is a second-cycle higher education degree. In some cases, the qualification requirement also includes the completion of studies in certain specified fields of study. The degree falls under the Article 11 of the Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the recognition of professional qualifications, levels.
