I began my PhD work at Aronia in summer 2015 funded by the Onni Talas foundation. My supervisors for the project at Aronia are Dr. Andreas Lindén and Dr. Jonna Engström-Öst.
I received my master's degree in aquatic sciences from the University of Helsinki in 2015. My master's thesis focused on the migration of headstarted juvenile green sea turtles in the Andaman Sea in Thailand and was supervised by FD Maria Koivisto. The title of my thesis is “Headstarted green sea turtles in the Andaman Sea, Thailand. Where do they go?”
- Phyto- and zooplankton population dynamics

My project: "Drivers of plankton populations in the Baltic Sea"
Plankton populations are known to undergo severe changes. While many studies have identified environmental variables affecting the populations, there is a lack of quantitative estimates for these effects in the marine environment. The aim of this project is to produce quantitative estimates about how physical variables in practice affect the large-scale fluctuations of plankton populations in the Baltic Sea. This will be approached using statistical time-series analysis of long-term monitoring data collected since 1979 by the Finnish Environment Institute and the Finnish Meteorological Institute, and since 1966 by Tvärminne Zoological Station.
The emphasis is on environmental variables which are modified by human activity and climate change, and which have been previously shown to affect plankton. Such variables are temperature, pH and salinity. The project aims to develop models that disentangle large-scale population changes, short-term movement and sampling error in the data. Some further data will be collected in this project, to estimate the magnitude of sampling error. The models developed will be used to illustrate likely consequences for plankton populations in the light of different scenarios of marine environmental change.
