Post doctoral researcher in ecophysiology

for the period 1.1.2018-31.8.2020 or according to agreement.

The post doctoral researcher will be working in the project “Spatiotemporal eco-evolutionary dynamics under environmental change” funded by the Academy of Finland and led by Academy research fellow Patrik Karell. In the project we investigate evolutionary adaptations to climate change with the tawny owl as model system. We are seeking for a candidate with experience in animal ecology, physiological ecology and immunoecology. Knowledge of ecological modelling is seen as a merit. The candidate will do field work with tawny owls mainly in Finland and the lab work will be done in Lund University in Sweden.

Climate change and other rapid changes in the environment force organisms to adapt genetically to the new circumstances. Although the question whether organisms can adapt genetically to climate change is highly topical we still know little about the mechanisms and the population level consequences.

One of few examples of climate-driven natural selection and population-level microevolutionary change is based on the study object in this project – the tawny owl. Tawny owls appear in grey and brown highly heritable colour morphs, of which the grey has higher survival in cold and snow-rich winter conditions. In mild winters there is no survival difference between the morphs. The emphasis in this project is to understand the underlying ecophysiological selection mechanisms by which the grey performs better than the brown morph in cold and snow-rich winters, and to investigate selection pressures and adaptation in other populations living in different environmental conditions.

The post doctoral researcher will be part of the Functional Ecology and Applications Team within the Bioeconomy Research Team at Novia UAS located at Campus Raseborg. The research team is a small and interactive research community in basic and applied ecology with several PhD students and post docs.

The post doctoral researcher is responsible for:

  • Collection of individual-based data on tawny owl reproduction from the study area
  • Blood sampling, morphometrics and physiological (energetic) measures of owls in the field
  • Molecular analyses of the samples in the laboratory (including qPCR analyses of telomere length and blood parasite intensities, measurements of oxidative stress)
  • Analysing and interpreting the results and writing of scientific articles based on the results together with the research team.

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • PhD in ecology, evolutionary biology or corresponding field
  • Solid experience of publication in scientific journals
  • Experience of and skills in laboratory methods in molecular ecology and ecophysiology (qPCR, oxidative stress, metabolic rate).
  • Competence to conduct independent field work with wild birds (owls)
  • Experience of physiological sampling and measurements in field conditions
  • Excellent knowledge in English
  • Good teamwork abilities

Salary will be based on the guidelines by the Academy of Finland and on internal directives.
