Today anyone can see the traces of constantly growing population on Earth. Urgent demand for new energy sources, decreasing natural resources and increasing waste are major challenges for nations and municipalities all over the world. Environmental issues are nowadays considered a megatrend and business activities related to environment and energy are growing fast. To meet these challenges industrial companies, authorities and organisations need engineers that can grasp their assignments in a holistic way. These engineers need to have the required technical competence as well as capability to consider economy, legislation and social aspects.
Novia has experience since 1996 in educating environmental engineers. Now we are launching a new degree program for international students. Learning methods focus on strengthening the students´ ability to problem solving and teamwork. Written and oral communication is also on the scheme.
The engineering education has a strong base in chemistry, physics and modern mathematical methods as well as industrial economy, thus providing the essential tools to successful studies and an engineer's career. Especially in the beginning of the studies an effort is made to strengthen the English professional language, in order to facilitate successful studies. Basic courses in the two national languages Finnish and Swedish will also be provided.
The programme is designed to provide the students with a comprehensive competence in environmental and energy related issues that can be relevant especially for industrial companies, but also for authorities and organisations. The education includes among others resource and waste management, system analysis, emission control, energy production and environmental legislation, not forgetting project administration, which is the modern way of acting for most engineers. The broad base described above enables the engineers to start their career in numerous assignments and the holistic view gives tools to communicate and cooperate with different specialists. In cooperation with partners the student has a possibility to specialise further in Energy technology. Practical training can be performed in companies and/or in research and development project groups. The practical training periods give the student the opportunities to get acquainted with working life, to get valuable contacts and not least to be able to test his or her abilities. The final Thesis project is mostly carried out in cooperation with companies. Examples of what a Environomental Engineer can do.
The student has two options for in-depth studies. The Energy technology profile will concentrate on energy efficiency and sustainable energy systems. The Environmental management profile provides tools for managing different environmental questions in a holistic way. In cooperation with partner universities the student has a possibility to specialise further or to get a broader competence by exchange studies.
