Bottlenecks and founder effects refers to potential changes in genetic composition in a population which may occur when a population is temporarily much reduced in its size. A potential bottleneck situation is explored in the house sparrow, a species which has in Finland and in many other places, suffered from a drastic reduction in population size. The bottleneck situation is demonstrated in the Finnish population of white-tailed deer; an introduced species founded by the realease of four individuals in 1934.
